Make no mistake about it. Copywriting isn’t a brand new thing at all. In fact, it’s been with us for as long as the art of selling pretty much. The only thing is, so many people – particulary here in Australia – don’t know what copywriting is at all.
Many people think it’s somehow related to underwriting in the insurance industry or copyright relating to intellectual property.
So, what exactly is copywriting?

Basically, copywriting relates to the art of selling a product or service through words. Every day you have exposure to copywriting through advertising on television, print, radio and of course the internet. The people who write the advertisements are copywriters.
Copywriters don’t just write advertisements though. They also write sales letters that you receive in the mail and read on the internet (landing pages), along with emails that attempt to sell products or services.

Any piece of writing that exists to sell you a product or service was most likely written by a copywriter.
During my copywriting career to date, I have written everything from sales letters and landing pages through to autoresponder emails and brochures. I absolutely love the art of selling through words and I’m of the opinion that every business can really benefit by working with a copywriter.
Sure, maybe I’m biased – okay, I know I am – but it’s a fact that everybody in business wants to increase their profits. And that’s what copywriters like me love to do for our clients!
Stay tuned for my next post where I’ll talk with you about hiring a copywriter to ensure it’s a positive experience all round.
